博士研究員のZianeさんのセミナーが開催されました!

タイトル:Swimming water droplets: tunable transport properties

要旨: In the past decade more and more systems of self-propelled particles, ranging from in vitro biological system to vibrated granular disks have been designed and studied, in the search for generic collective behaviors. Many of these active particles self-propel in a liquid medium. In particular several experiments report and discuss the self-propulsion of liquid droplets. In this case, the motion usually takes its origin in the presence of chemical reactions taking place at the droplet interface.

 In this talk, we report a new kind of self-sustained swimming droplets composed of pure water in an oil-surfactant mixture [1]. In this system, although no chemical reaction occurs, the complex interplay of hydrodynamics, physico-chemistry and surface mechanics unexpectedly allows the water droplet to self-propel in the surrounding oil. These droplets made of bio-compatible materials are able to carry objects of different natures across a distance much larger than their size. After presenting these surprising transport properties, we will describe the physics at play in order to further control these droplets characteristics.
 Finally, these properties will be compared to those of an analog and well characterized system of swimming droplets where a chemical reaction occurs. In the light of these results, the fascinating applications of pure water swimming droplets will be presented.

マイクロ流体デバイスを用いた自己駆動液滴に関するセミナーで、未公開のデータも発表してもらいました。Zianeさんは前多研ではマイクロ流体デバイスとともに合成生物学の研究を開始します。

この日はZianeさんの誕生日でもありましたので、セミナー後に歓迎会&誕生日会を開催しました!

Zianeさんが日本に来られるときに持ってきたリンゴのワインがとても美味しく、前多研も国際的になってきました。福山君の論文お祝いも同時に開催しました。
